The Campus of International Excellence of the Sea (CEI·Mar) has received the Blue Economy Award from the Government of Andalusia in the twenty-eighth edition of the Andalusia Environment Awards (PAMA 2024). This recognition, granted by the Ministry of Sustainability, Environment and Blue Economy, is given to institutions, companies and social entities committed to sustainability in the Andalusian region.
In this edition, with a total of ten winners, CEI·Mar has been distinguished for its ability to "structure the marine-maritime activity of Andalusia, the south of Portugal and the north of Morocco, bringing together all the specialized knowledge." The delivery ceremony will take place on June 5 in Granada.
The jury highlighted that CEI·Mar "has become an international benchmark in teaching, research and knowledge transfer in marine topics." Since 2022, it has been accredited by the General Directorate of Research and Knowledge Transfer of the Government of Andalusia as a Technology and Knowledge Transfer Entity.
CEI·Mar is the only marine excellence campus in Spain with global category, coordinated by the University of Cádiz and directed by the University Institute of Marine Research (INMAR). It brings together all the Andalusian universities with coasts, together with the Portuguese Algarve, the Magdalena University in Colombia and the Moroccan Abdelmalek Essaadi, in addition to the main marine-maritime research centers at the regional and national level. Since 2011, it has been a driving force and reference for the Blue Economy in Andalusia, leading the platform for the Andalusian Blue Economy and organizing the International Meetings on Knowledge and the Blue Economy (InnovAzul) in 2018 and 2022.
Currently, CEI·Mar leads the Complementary R&D&I Plan for Marine Sciences in Andalusia, ThinkinAzul-Andalusia, coordinating 49 projects that address challenges in marine-maritime monitoring and observation, climate change, aquaculture and others. sectors of the Blue Economy. In addition, he is involved in top-level international projects, such as the organization of the III Luso-Spanish Hydrography Conference together with the Navy Hydrographic Institute and the preparation of the Spanish Marine Sciences master plan.
